MINISTER AND SASKATOON GROUP EXPLORE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN FORT MCMURRAY

Released on April 17, 2006

Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline is joining a Saskatoon delegation Tuesday on a trip to Fort McMurray to look at enhancing the existing business relationships between Saskatchewan and the Alberta city at the heart of oil sands activity.

Cline joins Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison and Bryan Hnatiw of the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce's New Market Development Committee on the trip, which sees them meet with Fort McMurray Mayor Melissa Blake as well as officials from Suncor and Syncrude. The group will also tour Suncor's and Syncrude's operations outside the city.

"Saskatoon and other communities, supported by government, have done significant work to build strong relations with companies in the Fort McMurray region," Cline said. "All of us have been working hard to link the oil companies in Fort McMurray with Saskatchewan businesses as subcontractors – a win-win scenario for both the industry and our local businesses."

"Saskatoon's New Market Development Committee has been very proactive in reaching out to the Fort McMurray business community to help meet their needs," Atchison said. "We want to develop Saskatoon as a major supply hub and continue to build on the partnerships we've established."

While in Fort McMurray, the group will talk about opportunities in the manufacturing sector, and continuing linkages with the city. Talks are also expected on drilling development on the Saskatchewan side of the border on potential oil sands deposits.

A number of Saskatchewan companies are active in the region. Modular home manufacturers SRI Homes, Warman Home Center and J & H Builders are finding opportunities for their products there. Saskatoon machine shops Standard Machine, Industrial Machine, Nutana Machine, Siemens Laserworks, JNE Welding and Hitatchi as well as industrial services like Eecol Electric are working to capacity from orders within Saskatchewan as well as from Fort McMurray.

Northern Affairs Minister Joan Beatty and Saskatoon MLAs Judy Junor and Andy Iwanchuk are also a part of the delegation.
