TWO NEW URBAN PARK AGREEMENTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED THIS YEAR

Released on April 13, 2006

The provincial government will enter into two new urban park funding agreements this year. The provincial Budget has identified $94,000 to support The Battlefords River Valley Park and Weyburn's Tatagwa Parkway. The funding is determined on a per capita basis.

"People in these cities and the surrounding areas care deeply about these prominent green spaces and this funding will help ensure they remain focal points for community activity," Environment Minister John Nilson said. "I am pleased that the province is able to support these parks and work with the communities to make them more accessible, more beautiful and more enjoyable."

The Battlefords River Valley Park is located along the North Saskatchewan River between the City of North Battleford and the Town of Battleford. This river valley is rich in both natural and cultural history.

Tatagwa Parkway is made up of 180 acres of land adjacent to the Souris River and winds through the City of Weyburn. This area is dedicated to the preservation of native flora and fauna and is accessible from the downtown area.

These communities are members of the Association of Saskatchewan Urban Parks and Conservation Agencies (ASUPCA).

In total, Saskatchewan Environment will be providing $4 million to the seven urban parks in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Weyburn and the Battlefords.
