Saskatchewan's Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said he is encouraged by the reaction in Ottawa to the province's plea for emergency farm aid.Wartman said he will meet with federal NDP Agriculture Critic Alex Atamanenko in Regina today to continue pressing the need for assistance. The Member of Parliament will also talk to farmers directly about their own personal situations.
"It is clear that our messages about the farm income crisis were heard," Wartman said. "However, given the timelines we are working with in advance of the federal budget, it is important to continue to spread that message wherever and whenever possible."
"Saskatchewan producers' realized net farm income is projected to hit negative $200 million in 2006, more than $500 million below the five-year average," Wartman said. "When you factor in the losses farmers are facing in other provinces, it is obvious that we need a national solution from the federal government. We need a payment of $575 million immediately and dependable long term plans."
Wartman said that he will be in contact with the federal government right up until the federal budget, or until an announcement is made on a federal farm aid package.
