SaskPower is launching a new Mercury Thermostat Recycling Program to ensure mercury from old household thermostats is safely collected and recycled.
"SaskPower customers are increasingly buying new energy efficient thermostats to replace their older wall-mounted household thermostats that contain mercury. Through this new program, SaskPower will ensure that the mercury from those older household thermostats is not released into our air, land and water," Minister responsible for SaskPower John Nilson said.
"The amount of mercury found in the older household thermostats we are targeting with the program is relatively small, but it can still be toxic to birds, fish, wildlife and humans. This new program is consistent with our corporation's commitment to environmental responsibility," SaskPower Vice-president, Planning, Environment and Regulatory Affairs Rick Patrick said.
It is easy for all SaskPower customers to participate in SaskPower's Mercury Thermostat Recycling Program:
• Bring your standard, household wall-mounted thermostat to a participating SaskPower customer service office in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Yorkton, Moose Jaw, Swift Current or Weyburn.
• SaskPower staff will take the thermostat and recycle it safely.
Leaking or damaged thermostats or other products with mercury will not be accepted by SaskPower as part of this program. Customers are urged to not remove the mercury from an old thermostat, but should bring the entire thermostat to SaskPower for recycling.
