A ceremony will be held Saturday, Oct. 29th in Langham to officially open the town's new water treatment plant. This project has developed new ground water wells to eliminate raw water safety hazard due to surface water contamination, enhanced fire fighting capacity by providing dedicated storage, and ensures maintenance of potable water quality during peak summertime demand.Meeting the present Town of Langham water quality specifications, the plant can produce approximately 200,000 imperial gallons per day, and that number can be easily expanded as the entire system has been designed and built with future growth in mind.
The cost of the final phase of construction was approximately $1.68 million dollars and has resulted in excellent quality water at a reasonable cost ($6.50 per 1000 imperial gallons.)
The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan each contributed $388,986 to the project through the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program. The Town of Langham provided the balance.
"Langham's upgraded water treatment plant and reliable source of quality water make the community even more attractive to new businesses and new residents," said Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance, on behalf of Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport). "Meeting municipal priorities, such as modernized water systems, is integral to enabling our communities to grow, protecting our environment and contributing to a better quality of life for Canadians."
"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to working with local governments to develop, renew and enhance the infrastructure in our communities," Environment Minister David Forbes said on behalf of Government Relations Minister Len Taylor. "Our investment in the Langham water facility is an investment in the future health and sustainability of our communities."
"We now have a reliable supply of excellent quality water," Langham Mayor Emery Ens said. "Our community and the environment will both benefit from this project. We are grateful to the federal and provincial governments for their support in helping Langham achieve this goal."
The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program is fully subscribed.
