Released on October 24, 2005
GoldCorp Inc. of Chaplin has been convicted of an offence under provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for failure to ensure safety of a worker at work. The company was fined $90,000 plus a victim surcharge of $27,000.
The conviction follows an incident that occurred Aug. 11th, 2003 at GoldCorp's Chaplin salt processing plant, causing the death of 52-year-old Lester Robert Neitz.
"The supervision of workers remains a serious concern, despite measures taken by companies to improve their performance," Saskatchewan Labour Occupational Health and Safety Division Executive Director Allan Walker said. "The role of first line supervision is critical in ensuring that all safety measures are being complied with."
Last year, the Occupational Health and Safety Division investigated 13 work-related fatalities. The division will conduct over 4,500 workplace inspections and provide training to over 4,000 employer and worker representatives on their safety responsibilities this year.
Maximum penalties for an offence that causes the death or serious injury of a worker are $300,000 and two years in jail.
