As part of the province-wide celebration of Education Week, Learning Minister Andrew Thomson attended the grand opening of Vincent Massey Community School in Prince Albert today.
"The new Vincent Massey Community School is a cutting-edge educational facility of which we may all be very proud," Thomson said. "When we invest in capital projects for education we are investing in our students and in the future of Saskatchewan. The government's contribution to this project demonstrates our commitment to education and to providing modern, well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students and teachers."
Festivities at the school included a choral performance by the students of Vincent Massey Community School, addresses by various government and school officials, the presentation of the school key, an official ribbon cutting and the unveiling of a school plaque.
"Within our province's centennial year, we have opportunity to celebrate. Today is indeed a day of celebration—celebrating where we have come from, where we are now and where we are going," Thomson said.
The new pre-kindergarten to Grade 8 facility cost $7.1 million, with the Government of Saskatchewan providing $4.5 million in funding. The school design incorporates a neighbourhood planning concept featuring three learning neighbourhoods for grades pre-kindergarten to 2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8. Each of these neighbourhoods is grouped around the "Heart" of the school. The "Heart" consists of the school administration, resource centre, gymnasium and community school spaces.
