ONLINE ENCYCLOPEDIA LAUNCHED AT ST. EDWARD SCHOOL

Released on October 19, 2005

Encyclopedia Britannica Online was launched today at St. Edward School in Saskatoon at a joint Education and Library Week celebration.

"Encyclopedia Britannica Online is an important addition to Provincial Library's increasing online services," Saskatoon Fairview MLA Andy Iwanchuk said on behalf of Learning Minister Andrew Thomson. "We believe further advancing the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning throughout Saskatchewan will ensure the success of students, in school and in life."

Bibliobranchée (a database of French language newspapers) and Encyclopedia Britannica Online have been added this year to the collection of journals, newspapers and reference works that are available to all schools in the province. Encyclopedia Britannica Online offers three publications – Encyclopedia Britannica, Britannica Student Encyclopedia and Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia that include over 98,000 articles and a world atlas. Some features of the encyclopedia include a "Year in Review" section and a timeline browse.

This resource has been provided by the Multitype Library Database Licensing Program, which gives teachers, students and parents in the province access to over 7,000 full-text magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals and other reference works. Schools receive the databases directly through an IP address. Teachers and students can access the databases from home by connecting to the school site or by using their public library card to connect to the public library.

Education Week and Library Week are both celebrated from Oct. 16th to 22nd. More information is available at www.sasked.gov.sk.ca.
