SASKATCHEWAN CENTENNIAL 2005 YOUTH AMBASSADOR VISITS NORTH BATTLEFORD STUDENTS

Released on November 30, 2005

Students in North Battleford are joining in the chorus of praise for Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Youth Ambassador Theresa Sokyrka.

Sokyrka will visit two schools in North Battleford, two of the final four stops she will make as part of the Theresa Sokyrka Great Centennial Road Trip.

"Saskatchewan's centennial has fostered a renewed sense of optimism and confidence in our province and our youth ambassador certainly showed young people that there is a bright future in this province," Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 Chair and Moose Jaw North MLA Glenn Hagel said. "It is encouraging that so many young people took part in the Theresa Sokyrka Great Centennial Road Trip, as they are the generation that will make a difference in the future of our province and set the direction for our second century."

Throughout the year, dozens of classrooms submitted their centennial stories, photographs and celebrations to www.sask2005.ca/youth. Each online submission qualified for an opportunity to have Theresa Sokyrka visit their classroom and perform for the entire school.

About 180 students from McKitrick Community School will host Sokyrka at 1:30 p.m. on November 30th, 2005. Twenty-two students from École Père Mercure will hear her motivational message at 2:30 p.m.

"Theresa has been an inspiration to many young people in our province and we're absolutely thrilled that our students have an opportunity to share their centennial message with the youth ambassador," McKitrick Community School Principal George Ridley said.

"It is so great that Saskatchewan Centennial 2005 is providing opportunity for students to meet a young person who has proven it's possible to be a success in Saskatchewan," École Père Mercure Director Claude Desnoyer said. "Our school is honoured to meet with her and learn more about her experiences."

More than 200 classrooms and schools registered to receive one of the 20 opportunities available to have Sokyrka visit their school and perform during the centennial year. The North Battleford performances are two of the final four appearances that the youth ambassador will make on November 30th and December 1st. The other stops include an appearance at Father Robertson School in Saskatoon on Wednesday morning and a performance at the Jack MacKenzie School in Regina on Thursday morning, which students from St. Gabriel School will also attend.
