Today, 15 Saskatchewan citizens were recognized for receiving national and international honours at a ceremony at Government House."These recipients have made extraordinary contributions to people in Saskatchewan and beyond," Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock said. "They prove that individuals do, indeed, possess the power to improve the world, and it is most fitting that we celebrate their remarkable achievements and generosity."
The honorees have received the Order of Canada, the Order of Merit of the Police Forces, the Royal Victorian Order, the Medal of Bravery, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Royal Victorian Medal, l'Ordre national du Mérite from France, the Order of Sikatuna from the Philippines, and the Order of Poland.
"Those being recognized today exemplify the spirit that built Saskatchewan into a wonderful province," Provincial Secretary Joan Beatty said.
The Canadian honours system dates from 1967 when the Order of Canada was established. The Order of Military Merit and the civilian Decorations for Bravery were added in 1972. There is now a wide variety of orders, decorations and medals.
Saskatchewan's recognition of national honours has been held annually since 1985.
