Under Saskatchewan's Heritage Property Act, the John Nugent Studio has been officially designated as a Provincial Heritage Property.Located in Lumsden, the John Nugent studio is a masterpiece designed by internationally renowned Saskatchewan architect, Clifford Weins. The studio is fittingly named after John Nugent, one of Canada's master sculptors who used the building as a studio for large scale steel.
"Mr. Weins and Mr. Nugent are important figures in Saskatchewan history," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "Their vision will now be preserved as a legacy for future generations to enjoy with this designation of the John Nugent Studio as a heritage property."
In 1967, the Nugent Studio received a Massy Silver Medal for architectural design. The design has been praised by architectural magazines and books and will be part of the retrospective exhibition Telling Details: The Architecture of Clifford Wiens and a symposium Homemade Modernism: Prairie Architecture Since 1955 presented by the Mendel Art Gallery.
