SUBSTANCE ABUSE CLINICAL CONFERENCE UPDATE

Released on November 24, 2005

Addictions workers and others will meet in Saskatoon from Jan. 30th to Feb. 1st, 2006 to participate in a national clinical conference to learn the most innovative techniques to treat people with addictions. Today, Healthy Living Services Minister Graham Addley announced the theme and keynote speakers for the conference, which developed from Saskatchewan's innovative work in addictions.

The theme of the conference is "Moving Forward". It is a unique opportunity for addictions and mental health workers, health promotion and public health practitioners, aboriginal groups, law enforcement representatives and others from across the country to share information on the best and most promising educational and clinical practices for helping people whose lives have been damaged by addiction. The public is invited to participate in an evening community education and dialogue session on Monday, Jan. 30th.

"Our government is looking forward to hosting a national conference of this calibre," Addley said. "This is a concrete outcome from the meeting of Western Ministers of Health, Justice, and Public Safety. We are confident that this conference will provide addictions workers and others with an exciting opportunity to learn from the experts and from each other. This will lead to providing the best services possible to people with addictions across the country, and of equal importance, how to prevent substance abuse altogether."

Opening keynote speaker will be Wayne Skinner, Deputy Clinical Director of Addictions Programs at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Ontario. Mr. Skinner will focus on best practices in the treatment of drug abuse, and will identify strategies that practitioners can use in applying these practices.

Andrea Stevens Lavign, Director of Health Promotion, also from the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health, will focus on innovative strategies for substance abuse prevention in the prevention plenary.

Saskatchewan will host the conference on behalf of First Ministers from across Canada. The conference is sponsored by Saskatchewan Health, the Council of the Federation and Health Canada. Preliminary program and registration information for the conference will be available soon.
