SCN LAUNCHES CENTENNIAL CANOE RACE DOCUMENTARY

Released on November 4, 2005

SCN today launched an exciting new series documenting a historical centennial canoe competition. Saskatchewan Centennial Canoe Quest is a two-part series that follows 30 teams as they race to win an 1,100-kilometre expedition that traces the original voyageur trade route on the Churchill River.

"I was excited to cheer the teams across the finish line at Sturgeon Landing last July, and to see this wonderful documentary that showcases the canoe race as well as the people and culture of northern communities," Minister responsible for SCN Joan Beatty said. "SCN's continued work with Saskatchewan's independent producers ensures more stories about our large and diverse province can be told."

Produced by Saskatoon's Juxtapose Productions, Saskatchewan Centennial Canoe Quest follows the 30 teams for the entire 16-day race. One team traveled from Scotland to participate, and one Saskatchewan team hand-built their canoe for the centennial race.

"The teams traveled down the challenging Churchill River through the sacred and historical lands of our north in wide voyageur-style canoes – and no one returned unchanged," producer Sandra Panko said. "Without the support of SCN, we couldn't have made this documentary – they are valued partners in everything we do."

SCN will premiere Saskatchewan Centennial Canoe Quest commercial-free beginning at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9th. Full programming details are available at www.scn.ca.

Throughout 2005, SCN has been Saskatchewan's centennial network, broadcasting commercial-free stories that celebrate our culture and connect the people of our region on cable, wireless, digital and satellite television networks.
