FREE TREE SEEDLINGS AVAILABLE FROM SASKPOWER

On May 4th and 5th, Saskatchewan residents can pick up a free paper birch tree seedling at their local SaskPower Customer Service office.

The seedlings, grown at the SaskPower Shand Greenhouse, are provided free of charge as part of the annual "Our Treehouse to You" seedling distribution program.

"Providing these tree seedlings is just one of the ways SaskPower demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "The paper birch is Saskatchewan's provincial tree, so planting one of these seedlings this spring is a great way to mark our province's centennial while helping to protect the environment."

As well as adding beauty to our communities, trees help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering pollution. Once mature, an average-sized tree absorbs about 4.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.

The SaskPower Shand Greenhouse operates on waste heat from the nearby Shand Power Station in Estevan. Since opening in 1991, the greenhouse has grown and distributed millions of seedlings – over 450,000 annually. In addition to the "Our Treehouse to You" customer seedling distribution program, the greenhouse provides free seedlings for environmental, wildlife and conservation projects throughout the province, and delivers the Energy and Our Environment presentation to elementary school students.
