PROVINCIAL YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE INVITES NEW MEMBERS

Released on March 3, 2005

Are you a young Saskatchewan person who is passionate about your province? Do you want the opportunity to express your ideas and opinions on issues affecting Saskatchewan youth? Do you want to make a difference? Then the Provincial Youth Advisory Council (PYAC) is looking for you.

PYAC is actively recruiting Saskatchewan youth between the ages of 14 and 29 to serve on the committee, which acts as a vehicle for increased communication and input between Saskatchewan's young people and the provincial government.

"Saskatchewan has benefited tremendously from youth since establishing the Provincial Youth Advisory Committee," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "These young people bring a fresh perspective, valuable insight and a wealth of great ideas to the table and our province is stronger because of it."

Since its inception in April 2003, PYAC has provided input and guidance into government initiatives and policy issues of concern to youth. Most recently, PYAC was consulted on the organization and format of the Saskatchewan Centennial Summit and several PYAC members attended the Summit as delegates representing youth. The committee meets a minimum of four times per year.

"This is a great opportunity for Saskatchewan youth to become involved in, and voice opinions about, issues that affect them," Beatty said. "Their contributions today will influence the decisions of tomorrow and lead to more responsive and effective actions for youth."

PYAC's make-up is diverse, including members from the North, First Nations and Métis communities, from urban and rural locales, visible minorities, and youth with disabilities.

The deadline for applications is March 22nd, 2005. For more information and application forms, log onto www.saskyouth.net or call (306) 787-5728.
