REGISTRATION CHANGES FOR HEAVY FARM VEHICLES

Released on June 29, 2005

Changes are being made to the vehicle registration system in the farm class this fall to address the damage heavy vehicles cause on Saskatchewan highways.

Effective Sept. 1st, registration fees for heavy farm trucks are being re-balanced. Fees will go up or down to more accurately reflect the road damage caused by particular vehicles.

In addition, a $32 perpetual farm trailer registration, with no insurance or annual renewal, will be available for all farm trailers on Sept. 1st. Owners of commercial trailers pulled by power-units will also have the option of purchasing a one-time plate for $100.

Beginning Oct. 1st, the registration exemption for farm pintle or bumper hitch trailers with a combined trailer and load weight of 4,600 kg (10,000 lbs.) or more will be removed due to their growing use and wear on Saskatchewan roads. The gross weight of these farm trailers will be included in calculating the registration fee for the trucks pulling them.

These changes are the final part of a review of vehicle registrations announced Marhc 29th, 2004.

"Over the past year, SGI has updated the vehicle registration system in Saskatchewan, making it more fair and balanced for all motorists," Minister responsible for SGI Maynard Sonntag said. "These vehicle registration changes to the farm class improve fairness so that those heavy vehicles which cause more damage on our roads pay higher registration fees."

Registration fees are collected by SGI on behalf of the provincial government to help pay for provincial expenditures such as road and highway maintenance, education and health care.
