TWINNING WORK CONTINUES ON HIGHWAY 16 NEAR BATTLEFORD

Released on June 16, 2005

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation has started work to continue twinning one of the province's primary transportation corridors, Highway 16 west of Battleford.

"This twinning is part of our commitment to improving Saskatchewan's transportation network," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Our progress toward the completion of twinning Highway 16 will increase safety along a primary route and support regional economic development.

Transportation is an enabler for economic development at both the regional and national levels, and this project demonstrates once again that this is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada," Sonntag added.

The continued twinning of Highway 16 between Saskatoon and the Alberta border consists of paving from the end of the four-lane highway west of North Battleford to 5 km east of Delmas, for a total of 13.6 km. The project is valued at approximately $4.8 million and is being cost-shared with the federal government through the Canada-Saskatchewan Strategic Infrastructure Fund (CSIF).

Traffic flow will not be disrupted through the construction area, although traffic will encounter trucks hauling material in the vicinity. Weather permitting, construction is expected to be complete by approximately July 8th.

Additional construction is taking place from 7.1 km east of the east junction of Highway 21 at Maidstone to 3.8 km west of the west junction of Highway 21, and on Highway 21 and ancillary roadways for a total of 19 kilometres. This consists of the construction of a new subgrade for the twinning of Highway 16 along a route north of the town of Maidstone.

Traffic flow along municipal roads crossing the new subgrade will be disrupted and will be required to reduce speeds to 60 km/h or less. The value of this work is approximately $3.8 million and will be completed, weather permitting, by July 30th.

Surfacing has already begun on previously completed sections of the subgrade, and is targeted for completion in approximately mid-September.
