CLINE JOINING PRIME MINISTER'S TRADE MISSION TO CHINA

Released on January 13, 2005

Industry and Resources Minister Eric Cline is traveling to Asia to promote the province's key economic sectors on the Team Canada mission to China, and in separate meetings in Japan.

Cline will be in Japan January 15th-17th. While in Tokyo, Cline will promote the uranium industry and advanced technologies in meetings with Tokyo Electric Power Corporation (TEPCO), Japan Canada Uranium (JCU), Overseas Uranium Resource Development (OURD) and Hitachi.

Japan is Saskatchewan's second-largest international trading partner, behind the United States. Japan recently announced an ambitious nuclear power program that will provide an excellent opportunity for Saskatchewan uranium producers to increase sales to Japan.

Cline will then join a Saskatchewan delegation on Prime Minister Paul Martin's Team Canada mission to China, which will introduce the delegates to local decision-makers and business leaders in Shanghai and Beijing.

"Asia has some of the fastest growing markets in the world, and it is important for us to be at the door advancing our products and companies," Cline said. "Our meetings and the trade mission will provide excellent opportunities for local businesses to champion their services and for us to strengthen well-established trading relationships."

In China, Saskatchewan delegates will promote the province's enhanced oil recovery technologies in meetings with a subsidiary of China's largest oil company, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and PetroChina. Meetings are also scheduled to promote potash, forestry and advanced technology.

China is Saskatchewan's third largest export market. Sales to China have averaged more than $612 million a year over the past 12 years. China is also Saskatchewan's second largest potash customer and substantial growth in the country's need for potash is anticipated.

Saskatchewan participants on the Team Canada mission include representatives from Cameco, the University of Saskatchewan, A-1 Soybeans, and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre.
