The week of February 27th to March 5th, 2005 has been proclaimed "Engineering and Geoscience Week" in Saskatchewan, coinciding with National Engineering Week across the country.The event has extra significance this year, as it marks the 75th anniversary of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
"Acknowledging this special milestone has particular meaning to Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "We all depend in many ways on engineers and geoscientists, but they have had a particularly vital responsibility in creating and maintaining the transportation infrastructure that Saskatchewan possesses today, and which we continue to improve. This network is central to the provincial economy, delivering people and goods to destinations here and around the globe, providing jobs, supporting tourism, and enabling local economic development."
Engineers and geoscientists have a unique role in our society, APEGS President Clarence Reed, P.Eng. said.
"For the past 75 years, APEGS has regulated the practice of engineering, and since 1997 the practice of geoscience, in our province. Today, it represents more than 5,000 members," Reed said. "From developing our oil and gas, mining, and agriculture resources to ensuring essential services such as light, water, and telecommunications are always on, Saskatchewan's Professional Engineers and Geoscientists are involved in every aspect of our lives. We apply our knowledge, training, and ingenuity to make your everyday conveniences operate efficiently, safely and conveniently."
