REGINA QU'APPELLE HEALTH REGION RECEIVES INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING

Released on February 21, 2005

Saskatchewan Health is distributing money to health regions from the $66 million incremental federal funding pledged for this fiscal year at the 2004 First Ministers Meeting. The funds will be spent on improving patient access to quality services.

Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region received $1,970,000 earmarked specifically for infrastructure upgrades. The region will be using these funds to install two new chillers at the Regina General Hospital. The new units will replace two 17-year-old units, increase the air conditioning capacity at the hospital, and meet current refrigerant protocols. The new chillers will also allow the hospital to accommodate the cooling needs of the new Centre for Mother/Baby Care, which will be developed at the General Hospital. Using modern technology, the new units will be more energy efficient, thereby reducing operating costs at the General Hospital.

"The regional health authorities are making wise investments that will support better patient care," Health Minister and Regina Lakeview MLA John Nilson said. "We are working together to address immediate needs within the health system, while also looking to the future to create improved, sustainable health care."

"This new chiller units at Regina General Hospital will greatly improve our ability to meet future development needs at the hospital while improving energy efficiency," Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Operations Support vice-president Donna Evans said.

Health regions will receive additional funding for other areas, such as reducing surgical and diagnostic wait times, purchasing equipment, and improving patient safety. Saskatchewan Health will also invest significant portions of the federal funding in initiatives that are more provincial in nature, and that will serve the needs of all health regions.
