MEE-TOOS FOREST PRODUCTS RECEIVES TIMBER ALLOCATION

Released on February 4, 2005

Mee-Toos Forest Products has been granted a five-year licence to harvest timber on more than 1.6 million hectares of Provincial forest in the province's northeast. Saskatchewan Environment Minister David Forbes and Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) Chief Ron Michel announced the Term Supply Licence at a ceremony in Prince Albert today.

The Term Supply Licence is an important milestone for Mee-Toos, which is wholly owned by PBCN. The increased security of supply for the company will help it develop local capacity and a business development plan and search for potential industrial partners. The agreement also addresses other interests in the area, with a portion of the available wood set aside for other operators to access.

"This licence is an affirmation of the government's firm commitment to the pursuit of sustainable forest economic developments with the direct participation of First Nations and northern communities," Forbes said. "This is a significant step forward in implementing the province's forest development strategy."

"Today, we celebrate a significant achievement for the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation," Michel said. "Through Mee-Toos and other economic development initiatives, we are working to take control of our own economic destiny, and provide good opportunities for our communities and young people."

A Forest Management Trust Fund is already in place. Reforestation fees paid on each cubic metre of timber harvested from the area go into the fund, which is spent on forest renewal and management activities to ensure the forest's long-term sustainabiltiy. As well, an integrated land use plan, developed with extensive public consultation, has been completed for the area.

The licence authorizes the harvest of more than 200,000 cubic metres of wood annually. Harvesting based on the new licence will begin following Saskatchewan Environment's approval of a five-year operating plan, which is currently being developed. The company's operations to date have been based on annual permits, issued by Saskatchewan Environment.
