SASKPOWER FINED AFTER WORKER INJURED

Released on December 21, 2005

SaskPower has been fined $32,500 after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its workers as required by Section 3(a) of The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993.

The company was charged after a September 26th, 2003 incident at SaskPower's Peebles sub-station in which a worker suffered serious electrical burns after attempting to work on an electrical cabinet that had not been de-energized.

After entering a guilty plea to breaching its duties under Section 3(a) of the Act, SaskPower was fined $25,000 and the court assessed an additional $7,500 victim surcharge for a total penalty of $32,500.

"Employers who work with high-hazard processes must be held to the highest standard of care," Occupational Health and Safety Acting Executive Director Glennis Bihun said. "Everyone in the workplace has a responsibility to put health and safety first."
