DEBDEN SCHOOL REOPENS AFTER RENOVATIONS

Released on December 16, 2005

Residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the completion of renovations and the reopening of Debden School in Debden, which is located about 95 kilometres northwest of Prince Albert, today.

"We are committed to high-quality education for all of Saskatchewan's youth, in all parts of our fine province," Saskatchewan Rivers MLA Lon Borgerson said on behalf of Learning Minister Andrew Thomson. "Capital projects such as this help us achieve excellence in our education system. The renovated Debden School will go a long way toward helping students reach their potential."

The project was announced in February 2005. Saskatchewan Learning is providing approximately $2 million for this project over four years. Approximately $500,000 was contributed in 2005 with the remaining department funding spread equally over the next three fiscal years. The Debden School renovation is being cost-shared with the Parkland School Division.

Some of the improvements in the school include a newly renovated Kindergarten, gymnasium, performing arts area, computer and science classrooms, staff room and administration area. The school will now also provide separate teaching spaces for both the English classes and French immersion. The heating/ventilation/air-conditioning system has been upgraded as well.

The total commitment by Government to Kindergarten – Grade 12 capital projects across the province this fiscal year is $28.4 million.

"When we invest in capital projects for education we are investing in our students and in the future of Saskatchewan," Borgerson said. "The government's contribution to this project demonstrates our commitment to education and to providing modern, well-equipped learning facilities for Saskatchewan students and teachers."
