During this special season, it is an honour to bring you warm centennial greetings on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada.It has been an unforgettable year. Tens of thousands have returned home to join us in commemorating the 100th anniversary of Saskatchewan's inauguration into the dominion of Canada. I have had the rare privilege of celebrating with citizens in every corner of our vast province. I have witnessed the outstanding dedication and excitement of so many Saskatchewan people.
In may, we were deeply honoured by the visit of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. Our sovereign referred to Canada as her "home away from home", and she described Saskatchewan as "a forward-looking province of fertile landscapes, dynamic towns and cities with expanding, diverse communities." It was a proud moment, indeed, when a live audience of 10,000 and a national television audience of two million witnessed a majestic rendition of our royal anthem to greet our monarch and Prince Philip at the Lieutenant Governor's Centennial Gala.
Amid the countless celebrations, this momentous year has been a time of reflection upon our many blessings. We are immeasurably fortunate to live in one of the world's most privileged nations, and in a province that is renowned for its volunteers. 2005 is also "the year of the veteran"; we should be especially thankful for the greatest volunteers Canada has ever known – our veterans.
Our inheritance in Saskatchewan is extraordinary. The First Nations and the pioneers laid the foundation for our remarkable province. With fewer than one million residents, Saskatchewan has given the world gifted people and revolutionary ideas in numbers that are disproportionate to our size. As our centennial year draws to a close, it is time for us to contemplate our contributions … our legacy for the future.
I am reminded of the words of the founder of the Scout movement, Lord Baden-Powell, who wrote, "So in our work – indeed, in any work of life – we should look forward, well forward with high aims and hope; look around with joy and goodwill; look back with thankfulness at what has been accomplished, and then press on with renewed vigour, with helpful initiative, and with broadened outlook, toward the highest goal."
