Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty today put their provincial pride on the line for this weekend's Vanier Cup. Premier Calvert has pledged to wear the jersey of Ontario's Wilfrid Laurier University, if they win the game, and Premier McGuinty will wear the University of Saskatchewan jersey, if they are victorious.The Saskatchewan Huskies and the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks will meet in the 2005 Desjardins Vanier Cup on Saturday, December 3rd at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. The game will decide the Canadian Interuniversity Sports football championship.
"As Premiers who take pride in the quality of our young people, we're both looking forward to an exciting game that represents the best in Canadian university athletics — teamwork, sportsmanship and giving your best," Premier Calvert said. "And I understand that Premier McGuinty's family roots are Irish, so when he dons the Saskatchewan Huskies jersey, he'll be used to wearing green."
As part of their wager, the Premier's have agreed to wear the opposing team's jersey at a public event next week.
"It's going to be a great event for everyone involved — the fans can look forward to some great football, it will be an experience the players never forget — and when it's all over, Premier Calvert is going to look great wearing Laurier's purple and gold," said Premier McGuinty.
"I know that I speak for Premier McGuinty and myself in congratulating both teams on their hard work and commitment in reaching the Vanier Cup and wishing the players all the best on a great game," Premier Calvert said.
