The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee has two new co-chairs. Rachel Jane Jobb of Southend is currently pursuing her education at the University of Saskatchewan. Michael Lothian lives in Dundurn and works as a self-employed financial planner in Saskatoon.In addition, seven new members have now joined Jobb, Lothian and the other 16 returning members of the group. Members are between the ages of 14 and 29 and have a diversity of experiences and backgrounds.
The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee, established in April 2003, provides the provincial government with input and guidance into policy issues and initiatives like youth attraction and retention and the education system. Their advice contributed to the creation of SaskYouth.net, a Web site linking youth to practical information and answers to their questions, big and small.
"The Provincial Youth Advisory Committee provides an opportunity to engage the young people of our province in the decision-making process and to listen to their needs and concerns for their future in Saskatchewan," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "I want to thank the young people who have agreed to serve on the committee."
In this most recent recruitment period, there were 64 applications from youth to serve on the committee. The selection process included significant input from the youth already serving on the committee. Beatty said that even so, with applicants of such a high calibre, it was difficult to choose only seven appointees.
"The number and scope of the applications proves that youth in Saskatchewan are interested in opportunities of this nature," Beatty said. "I always look forward to the insight and fresh perspective our young people bring to the table."
