Saskatchewan will pay tribute to music in all its forms and to the people who work to promote and teach it during Saskatchewan Music Week, October 31st – November 6th, jointly proclaimed by the departments of Culture, Youth and Recreation and Learning."Music is a universal language and it has the power to bridge ages, cultures and beliefs," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "We are fortunate to have a solid network of talented and dedicated people within organizations like the Saskatchewan Band Association who use music to teach and inspire, enriching and enhancing the quality of life that we all enjoy."
"Participation in a band or other music group offers young people a chance to develop important learning skills and gain confidence in their own abilities," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "Music as a cultural experience enriches all our lives. We are pleased to support it as part of the learning experience for Saskatchewan students."
There are approximately 30,000 youth who are currently involved in some form of musical education within the province including community, school, and pipe bands and choral groups. Within the school system, music forms one of the strands of the K-9 compulsory Arts Education program. All Saskatchewan children are able to learn about the creative, historical, cultural, and critical components of music.
Individual communities and groups have a variety of activities planned to celebrate Saskatchewan Music Week, including open houses, concerts and band workshops.
