AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT UNDERWAY IN CREIGHTON

Released on October 20, 2004

Construction of Bedrock Manor featuring 12 new affordable housing apartments officially began today with a sod turning ceremony in the town of Creighton.

The project was developed, is owned and will be managed by R.L. Miller Contracting Ltd. The funding is made possible through a partnership between the developer, the municipality and the provincial and federal governments. This partnership has helped raise approximately $842,000 worth of funding. More than $530,000 has been committed through the Centenary Affordable Housing Program (CAHP). The town of Creighton has contributed land, sewer and water services and the developer has privately financed the balance of the total funding.

Bedrock Manor will be a one-story walk-up apartment complex that has been built for mature Creighton residents with low to modest incomes. The project is scheduled to be completed by May 2005.

"This project has truly brought together all levels of government with the community and its residents to meet their specific housing needs. It will also enable the residents to continue to work and live in Creighton," noted Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance, on behalf of Joe Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing."

"These 12 new affordable apartments are made possible thanks to the provincial HomeFirst housing strategy," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said on behalf of Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford. "Projects like this one in our northern communities contribute significantly to the health and well being of our residents and are a starting point to independence and lasting participation in the social and economic life of the province."

"New housing is always welcome in Creighton and Bedrock Manor has generated tremendous excitement," Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler said. "The new apartments will help residents who have worked and lived here their entire lives stay close to home and family and can help us build a lasting and sustainable community."

CAHP is funded under the Canada-Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Agreement. It provides $22.93 million in federal funding for affordable housing, matched by Saskatchewan, municipalities and other parties. With these matching contributions, a total of $45.9 million over five years will be available for affordable housing.
