SHAUNAVON AIRPORT GETS UPGRADES

Released on October 15, 2004

The Town of Shaunavon now has a revitalized airport thanks to support from the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program (CSIP).

Through the program, the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan each committed $189,916 to the $727,667 upgrade to increase accessibility to the airport during inclement weather, providing better access for air ambulances.

"The Government of Canada committed to providing all Canadians with basic infrastructure services and is proud to assist the Town of Shaunavon with the reconstruction of its municipal airport," said the Honourable Stephen Owen, Minister of Western Economic Diversification and Minister of State (Sport). "This project will ensure area residents will have enhanced access to emergency air ambulance services and the convenience of a municipal airport for business and recreational users."

"We are pleased to contribute to this project that will improve access to Shaunavon and provide opportunities for tourist and business activity as well as better air ambulance service," Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Wartman said on behalf of Government Relations Minister Len Taylor. "This project is another step toward ensuring the sustainability of Saskatchewan communities."

"Thanks to the Canada–Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program, the Town of Shaunavon will have one of the most modern airports in the area," Mayor Sharon Dickie said. "Adding a Global Positioning System and Automated Weather Observation System is another example of our community's forward thinking as access and safety of our citizens will be enhanced by these upgrades."

This is the fourth year of the five-year program that will see an investment of more than $170 million in federal, provincial and municipal funds in Saskatchewan's municipalities.

The first priority for infrastructure investment through the CSIP is green municipal projects such as water and wastewater developments and upgrades, solid waste management and recycling, and improving the energy efficiency of buildings owned by municipal governments. Before receiving final approval, community projects must undergo a review process under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
