PART OF SAFER COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBOURHOODS ACT IN FORCE OCTOBER 15TH

Legislation that will enable police to deal with fortified buildings comes into force October 15th.

Under this new legislation, fortifications that cause public safety concerns could be removed by police. These fortifications often include bulletproof glass or explosive-resistant materials, armour to reinforce doors, and bars on windows or doors.

This part of The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act addresses fortifications in buildings that pose a threat to public safety by preventing emergency response personnel, law enforcement officials, or occupants from gaining access to or escaping from fortified buildings in an emergency.

"Keeping communities safe is a top priority of this government," Justice Minister Frank Quennell said. "The fortified buildings part of this new legislation will help make significant improvements to community safety by removing dangerous fortifications on problem properties."

The remainder of The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act will come into force on November 15th.
