Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer today said recent problems in the United States with influenza vaccine supply have no implications for Saskatchewan.There have been reports in the media that Chiron, an influenza vaccine manufacturer, has had its license temporarily suspended in the United Kingdom where it produces the vaccine, Dr. Ross Findlater said. Chiron was expected to supply the United States with vaccine this flu season.
"Chiron does not supply Canada with vaccine," Findlater said. "Canadian contracts are with Aventis and ID Biomedical, formerly known as Shire. Our Saskatchewan supply is solely from ID Biomedical, therefore there are no implications for us."
Saskatchewan Regional Health Authorities have been receiving concerned calls from the public as a result of the vaccine situation in the United States. Findlater wants Saskatchewan people to know it is business as usual at public health clinics.
"I encourage everyone to get the flu shot," Findlater said. "Influenza is a serious, highly contagious illness, and an annual flu shot is the best way to prevent it."
Regional Health Authority public health offices can be contacted for information on where and when to receive flu shots during the month of October.
