NEW CHAIRPERSON APPOINTED TO NORTH WEST REGIONAL COLLEGE BOARD

Released on October 8, 2004

Learning Minister Andrew Thomson has appointed E. Ann McArthur as chairperson of the North West Regional College Board.

"I am pleased that Ann McArthur has accepted the role of board chairperson for the North West Regional College and I appreciate that she will be dedicating her knowledge, time and energy to the continued excellence of the college," Thomson said. "Board chairs of all our eight regional colleges are recognized and valued for their leadership role within their regions and throughout Saskatchewan's post-secondary education and training sector."

Board chairpersons of regional colleges, along with their board members, serve as stewards of their college with statutory authority and obligation to guide the affairs of the colleges. They set the strategic direction of their college in response to the needs of the geographical region represented. As trustees for regional colleges, they meet with the Minister to share and discuss such issues as strategic and business planning, policies and government direction.

"Having served as a board member for the past 4 years, I am pleased with the direction the college is heading," McArthur said. "The scope of programs and services offered through the North West Regional College continues to expand in response to the needs of business and industry. We are contributing to the economic growth of the region and preparing the future workforce. I accept and welcome the challenge of leadership, and look forward to a continued solid future for North West Regional College."

Regional colleges have been the province's primary vehicle for responding to the post-secondary education and training needs in rural and northern Saskatchewan for more than 30 years. Operating in approximately 40 locations, they offer a comprehensive array of credit courses and programs from the provinces' two universities and SIAST as well as basic education and a variety of non-credit courses.

"I look forward to working with Ann McArthur," Thomson said. "In her new role she will help ensure the well being of post-secondary education and training in northern Saskatchewan. I also thank Sherman Krahenbil, previous chair of the North West Regional College Board, for his service."
