Quality of life for Saskatoon people with disabilities is being enhanced with the conversion of a six-person group home into two four-person group homes and the renovation of a respite home.Community Resources and Employment provided Elmwood Residences Inc. of Saskatoon with a one-time capital grant of $284,000 for the purchase and renovation of the three homes, and is increasing annual operating grant funding by $165,000. Elmwood Residences Inc. also received assistance from the Saskatoon Housing Authority and service groups to complete the project, which improves residential service for the high needs individuals with intellectual disabilities who will live there.
"Quality housing is consistent with government's vision that all Saskatchewan people have opportunities to be independent and included in their communities," Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford said while attending a grand opening event at one of the renovated homes. "It's always rewarding to see the success that results from partnerships like this between the province and dedicated community-based organizations such as Elmwood Residences Inc." Crofford noted that October is Community Living Month in Saskatchewan, an opportunity to promote the importance and benefits of involving people with intellectual disabilities is all aspects of community life.
"A lot of people have worked very hard to make this project a reality," Elmwood Executive Director Shelley Bartram said. "With the support we've received, we are able to continue delivering quality residential services for people with disabilities who live in and around Saskatoon."
Elmwood Residences Inc. has been providing residential supports in Saskatoon since 1969. Currently, Elmwood is a significant residential service provider in the community living sector, operating 11 small group homes, one respite home, a 50-bed lodge and a Supported Independent Living Program.
Since release of the Saskatchewan Council on Disability Action Plan in June 2001, the Saskatchewan government has invested over $17 million to support people with disabilities. This fiscal year, over $2 million has been earmarked to increase capacity within communities to meet the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.
