The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $15 million to renovate and expand the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan."We are pleased to partner with the University of Saskatchewan and the Federal Government to construct a first class facility," Learning Minister Andrew Thomson said. "Our government made a commitment to strengthen the learning sector and through this expansion we will provide students with greater access to technology and to specialized areas of veterinary medicine."
"This is a complex multi-phase project, combining major renovations with the addition of new space and incorporating current knowledge and guidelines related to bio-security and safety," WCVM Dean Dr. Charles Rhodes said. "The federal government funding was contingent upon securing matching support, and we are very grateful to the Government of Saskatchewan for its contribution announced today."
Projects include a two-storey addition to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a consolidated research animal housing unit, additional research laboratories, and an upgraded diagnostic services area.
"Education and training today is more important than ever, and we need to continue to upgrade and expand our facilities so it can continue to serve our province," Thomson said.
"In the end it is about people – and this project will help us to attract outstanding faculty, researchers, staff and students," Dr. Rhodes said.
Established in 1964, the Western College of Veterinary Medicine enrolls 365 undergraduate and graduate students each year and has earned a reputation as one of the top veterinary colleges in North America. The College's accreditation was renewed in March 2004, and they received the highest level, a seven-year award, due to the funding and capital plans.
