The Regina 2005 Canada Games received a financial boost today when the provincial government fulfilled its total funding commitment for the event.Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty presented Bob Ellard, President of the Regina 2005 Canada Summer Games Host Society, a cheque for $989,789. The amount represents the remainder of the province's total funding commitment of $4 million.
The money goes for increased costs to host the games, opening and closing ceremonies, and initiatives for greater involvement of First Nations and Métis people in the games.
"The Regina 2005 Canada Games will definitely be a signature event during Saskatchewan's Centennial year," Beatty said. "The games will showcase those attributes, like our hospitality, enthusiasm and volunteer spirit, which make Saskatchewan so unique and special. The provincial government is more than happy to fulfill its commitment and contribute to the success of the games."
The Canada Games are the country's premiere multi-sport event and are held every two years, alternating between summer and winter. More than 4,000 athletes will converge in Regina August 6th to 20th, 2005 to compete in sports such as soccer, cycling, wrestling and canoeing. They will be accompanied by nearly 700 coaches, managers, officials and mission staff.
The event is expected to have a significant economic impact for the province, generating approximately $30 million in economic activity.
