The people of Meadow Lake and surrounding area have much to celebrate today as the new North West Post-Secondary Centre, operated by North West Regional College, officially opens its doors. Aboriginal Affairs Minister and Meadow Lake MLA Maynard Sonntag took part in the opening ceremonies on behalf of Learning Minister Andrew Thomson.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is investing approximately $3.4 million in the expansion of the North West Post-Secondary Centre," Sonntag said. "When we invest in post-secondary education and training we are investing in our students and in the future of Saskatchewan. This facility will ensure that students in northwest Saskatchewan receive a quality education in or near their home communities. Meeting the growing education and training needs of people and industry in the Meadow Lake area is important to the economic growth of the region."
Students in northwest Saskatchewan now have expanded access to a broad array of quality programming and courses through the college and its education partners, including offerings from SIAST, the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Regina, the First Nations University of Canada and the Dumont Technical Institute.
The facility offers up-to-date classrooms, computer labs, offices, meeting rooms and common areas. The new centre provides over 1900 square metres of new space, for a total of 4300 square metres of modern educational space.
"This long-awaited expansion has allowed North West Regional College to consolidate its operations under a single roof in Meadow Lake, providing an ideal home for our programs and those of our many partners," North West Regional College Board Chair Sherman Krahenbil said. "I'm sure it won't be long before the North West Post-Secondary Centre becomes the focal point for post-secondary education and skills training in the northwest."
"North West Regional College is committed to developing tomorrow's workforce," College President and CEO Bryan Nylander said. "Providing training closer to home is one step in the process. With the centre now having capacity for over 350 students, the college and its partners are positioned to respond to the training needs of the expanding economy of the northwest."
