Agriculture delegates from Canada, the United States and Mexico will meet in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico during the Tri-National Accord to discuss agricultural issues, including BSE, harmonization of animal health and food safety rules, and trade-distorting agricultural subsidies.Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Minister Mark Wartman will attend the 13th Annual Tri-National Accord, to be held March 10th-13th, 2004. The meeting provides an opportunity for Ministers and Secretaries of Departments of Agriculture to discuss common North American agricultural issues.
"At this year's Accord, Canadian Provincial Ministers of Agriculture will highlight the need for Canada, the United States and Mexico to follow science-based processes for animal health rules," Wartman said.
"It is critical for the three countries to work together as the international community recognizes the integrated nature of the North American cattle sector. In order to access international markets, confidence in the North American cattle industry must be demonstrated by resuming trade in live cattle and beef within North America."
Saskatchewan exports to the U.S. in 2003 exceeded $6.6 billion, with over $700 million in agriculture and agri-food sales. Imports from the U.S. were approximately $3.7 billion, with more than $260 million in agriculture and agri-food products.
Saskatchewan exports to Mexico in 2003 exceeded $230 million, of which over $210 million were agriculture and agri-food products. Imports from Mexico were approximately $35 million, with just under $6 million in agriculture and agri-food goods.
The 2005 conference will be hosted by the U.S. The City of Saskatoon was host in 2000.
