Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation has added 11 hybrid trucks, which run on a combination of gasoline and electricity, to its Central Vehicle Agency fleet."Hybrid vehicles are an important step toward reducing the impact that our need for travel has on the environment," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation Deb Higgins said. "As one of the first in the country to add hybrid trucks to its vehicle fleet, SPMC has shown leadership and commitment to this province's goal of building a green and prosperous economy."
General Motors introduced the world's first hybrid trucks earlier this year. These trucks feature a hybrid electric powertrain, advanced energy storage module, and regenerative braking.
"General Motors is also committed to reducing our impact on the environment," General Motors of Canada Director of Environmental Activities Bryan Swift said. "Part of our overall environmental strategy is to introduce hybrids in the highest fuel consuming vehicles first, including transit buses and full-size trucks, and then expand to SUVs and cars. We applaud the Government of Saskatchewan for the leadership they have demonstrated in adding these fuel efficient, no-compromise hybrid trucks to their fleet."
This system creates fuel savings of 10 to 12 per cent annually, or approximately 459 litres per vehicle, without reduction to the vehicle's capability. SaskTel, SaskPower, Highways and Transportation and Industry and Resources will utilize the vehicles for the next three years.
