SASKENERGY HEAD OFFICE HOME TO 2005 CANADA SUMMER GAMES

Representatives from the Canada Summer Games, SaskEnergy, the Government of Saskatchewan and the City of Regina gathered today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new headquarters of the 2005 Canada Summer Games. Also in attendance were athletes representing the 16 events that comprise the Games.

Located on the first floor of SaskEnergy Place at 1777 Victoria Avenue, the office space is being provided by SaskEnergy as part of its Canada Games sponsorship. Up to and during the 2005 Games – which take place from August 6th-20th, 2005 – the offices will house Canada Games staff and serve as a hub for a variety of Canada Games activities. As part of the recognition for providing office space for the Games, SaskEnergy will be the presenting sponsor of volunteers to the Games.

Mo Bundon, Volunteer Executive Vice-President of the 2005 Canada Games, is thrilled that SaskEnergy has provided space for staff.

"Once again SaskEnergy has stepped forward to lead our community in hosting a major sporting event," Bundon said. "This generous contribution of office space allows our staff the opportunity to work in quality surroundings. Today's celebration marks the first of many positive announcements concerning the Games and their partners."

Ron Clark, President and CEO of SaskEnergy, is equally excited about his corporation's involvement with the Games.

"SaskEnergy is proud to partner with the 2005 Canada Games," Clark said. "Together we will help provide Regina's devoted sports fans – and indeed sports fans across the province and country – with the opportunity to watch Canada's elite summer athletes compete in this national event."

Partnerships are crucial to the success of such events, according to Harry Van Mulligen, Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy.

"The 2005 Canada Games are a perfect example of how governments – federal, provincial and municipal – can work together effectively," Van Mulligen said. "By joining forces with the Canada Games Council and Crown corporations like SaskEnergy, different levels of government will help give Saskatchewan a centennial legacy of community pride as well as first-rate sports facilities and programs."

A former amateur athlete himself, Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco understands the importance of community support for the Games.

"In August of 2005, Regina will again be in the national spotlight," Fiacco said. "This will provide Regina residents with yet another opportunity to show their hospitality and community spirit to the rest of the country."

2005 will mark the twentieth time the Canada Games have been held. The first Games coincided with Canada's centennial year, 1967, and the 2005 Games will play an important part in Saskatchewan's own centennial celebrations.
