MOOSE JAW CULTURAL CENTRE OPENING

Released on June 19, 2004

The Government of Saskatchewan congratulates the City of Moose Jaw on the grand opening of the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre.

"The Moose Jaw Cultural Centre is truly a beautiful facility, and will make a valuable and lasting contribution to Moose Jaw's vibrant arts and culture scene," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "The provincial government is proud to have been able to support this wonderful project."

In 2000-01, the Government of Saskatchewan contributed $1.25 million to the project; the money came from the Community Initiatives Fund, which distributes casino profits throughout the province. The total cost of the facility, which incorporates three heritage buildings on Moose Jaw's historic Main Street, was $8.3 million.

The centre is designed to house all sorts of activities, from the performing arts to arts and cultural exhibitions to heritage and multicultural activities.

The project was spearheaded by a non-profit coalition of artists, arts supporters and arts-related businesses and groups known as Arts in Motion.

"The work that Arts in Motion did in making this dream a reality is truly remarkable, and deserves our congratulations and gratitude," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "Their dedication to their community, and to arts and culture in their community, has made Moose Jaw an even richer and more resurgent place than it already is, and an even better place in which to live, work and raise a family, or to visit."

"This is the culmination of an incredible effort by a huge number of people," Artistic/Executive Director of the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre Graham Hall said. "Now we will hear the laughter and the applause we've all been waiting for. This beautiful venue is something this city, and every citizen of this city, can be very proud of."
