Consumers are warned to carefully review the terms of rebate programs currently being offered by various retail outlets in Saskatchewan.These incentives may influence consumers to purchase a product they would not normally buy or influence them to pay an inflated price based on the expectation that money will be refunded at a later date.
Rebate offers and cashable voucher programs usually have conditions affecting their value and may not be redeemable in the time period or amount advertised, or at all.
Consumer Protection Branch warns that the terms and conditions of the rebate offer may be quite involved or complicated, and compliance with the terms may be so difficult that claims cannot be made.
When making a purchase, consumers should follow these simple guidelines:
- Make sure agreements and promises are in writing.
- Make sure all terms and conditions of rebates are clearly understood and followed.
- Ask questions if the information provided is not clearly understood.
- Keep a clear copy of all documentation involved in the transaction.
- Follow up with the retailer and the rebate company if the rebate or refund is not received within a reasonable period of time.
