FORMER CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER TO ASSESS MNS ELECTION

Released on July 20, 2004

Keith Lampard, former Chief Electoral Officer for the Province of Saskatchewan, has been hired to review the recent Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MNS) election and assess whether the election was properly conducted.

Lampard will provide an independent analysis of the appeals process and outcomes of the May 26th, 2004 MNS election, as well as draw conclusions and make recommendations to Aboriginal Affairs Minister Maynard Sonntag this fall.

Lampard was Chief Electoral Officer from 1982 to 1993. He is recognized as a technical expert, having overseen two general elections, six by-elections, two controverted elections, and one recount and has participated in a number of provincial and municipal commissions.

"Many Métis do not perceive the election as open and fair or that the results of this election represent the will of Métis people of the province," Sonntag said. "We are confident that the MNS and Métis Elections Commission will co-operate with Mr. Lampard while he conducts his review."

The provincial government suspended tripartite and bilateral funding to the MNS on June 17th, 2004. The province will consider the restoration of funding to the MNS after the review is complete.
