COMPLETION OF CYPRESS WIND POWER FACILITY EXPANSION

Seven more state of the art wind turbines are now supplying an additional 5 megawatts (MW) of EcoLogo-certified GreenPower to Saskatchewan consumers, with an expansion of the Cypress Wind Power Facility now completed. The $10.2 million expansion was completed on time and on budget.

"With this expansion now complete, Saskatchewan remains a leader in Canada in terms of wind and other alternative energy projects. The decision to add approximately 5 megawatts of zero emission wind generation at the Cypress Wind Power Facility - raising its output to 11 megawatts - is a result of the support customers across the province have shown for SaskPower's GreenPower product," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said.

"The Cypress Wind Power Facility is a central component in SaskPower's Green Power Portfolio, which will ensure that all of Saskatchewan's new electricity needs over the next 4-5 years are met from environmentally friendly sources, whose operations do not add to greenhouse gas emissions," SaskPower President and CEO Pat Youzwa said.

Along with environmental benefits, the Cypress expansion also generated important economic development opportunities. More than 40 per cent of the work had a Saskatchewan component, injecting about $4 million into the provincial economy.

SaskPower also purchases 11 MW of wind generation from the SunBridge Wind Power Project. Combined with SaskPower's 16 turbine Cypress Wind Power Facility, the province now produces 22 megawatts (MW) of electricity from wind, enough to meet the needs of approximately 9000 households.

GreenPower is currently available to all Saskatchewan customers, from large industrial users to small businesses and residential customers. A 100 kilowatt block of GreenPower – enough to do a month's worth of laundry – is available for $2.50/month. Additional support for GreenPower comes from long-term commitments by the Government of Saskatchewan, the Government of Canada, and SaskPower, along with major customers such as SaskEnergy and the University of Regina.
