As of July 1st, 28 new drugs were added for coverage under the Saskatchewan Drug plan, including new medications used in the treatment of chronic lung diseases and certain eye conditions."We are constantly working to improve the quality of health care services and access to care," Health Minister John Nilson said. "One way that is achieved is by providing cost-effective, quality medications."
Four medications were approved under the Exception Drug Status (EDS) for use when specific criteria are met. Physicians and pharmacists can apply for coverage of EDS drugs on behalf of their patients.
The list of medications added to EDS includes Spiriva (tiotropium), which is used for the treatment of certain types of chronic lung diseases. Nexium (esomeprazole), and Apo-Omeprazole (omeprazole) are used to treat various stomach disorders. Alphagan P (brimonidine) is for the treatment of certain eye conditions. Several new strengths or generic versions of drugs already listed in the Formulary have been added as full benefits or Exception Drug Status.
In deciding whether to cover new treatments, the Drug Plan looks at the medical benefits of each new drug and its value to the health system.
Currently, the drug plan covers about 3,500 products and subsidizes the cost of prescription drugs for approximately 113,000 families. The Drug Plan is targeted to people with high drug costs, low incomes, or a combination of both. In 2003-04, the drug plan processed approximately 8.6 million prescriptions and paid over $149 million.
