SENIORS SHOW ENTHUSIASM OVER COMPUTERS

Released on January 29, 2004

A new computer lab at Regina's Davis Mews seniors complex, that will help senior citizens learn and explore the internet, was officially opened today by Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford.

Seniors in five Regina social housing complexes benefited when the SaskTel Pioneers and SaskTel assisted the Regina Housing Authority, in providing computers and training for residents. The Centennial Student Employment Program provided a grant to hire a student to teach one-on-one computer tutorials to interested seniors in each complex.

"It is encouraging to learn about activities that involve partnerships and opportunities that enhance independence and life long learning for Saskatchewan citizens," Crofford said. "It is exciting to imagine what doors may open for seniors as they connect with family and friends and travel the world on the internet."

"Citizens from all walks of life, including persons with a physical disability, have an opportunity to develop new skills and broaden their education by the use of computers," SaskTel Pioneers spokesperson, Darrel Liebrecht said. "Our organization is pleased to be able to assist in enriching the lives of seniors in our community."

Wanda Falkowsky, chair of the Regina Housing Authority, is pleased with the number of seniors that have expressed an interest in the program.

"It is wonderful to have organizations such as the SaskTel Pioneers in our community. Without their assistance, projects such as this would be impossible to fund", Falkowsky said. "The Regina Housing Authority Board is very enthused that they could provide a service that is so widely embraced by the seniors."

The development of a Seniors Resource Network in Saskatchewan is currently being considered by the Regina Housing Authority. This network could provide information to seniors in areas such as recreation, health and housing.
