Attorney General Frank Quennell announced today that Justice officials are contacting Mr. Richard Klassen and lawyers for the other plaintiffs in the Klassen and Kvello lawsuit to offer to meet to discuss proposals to help the plaintiffs.
"I have instructed my officials to set up a meeting in Saskatoon to begin these discussions as soon as the Court of Appeal rules on the application for leave to appeal heard today," Quennell said. "There will be no discussion that compromises the ability of the defendants to appeal the judgment in the case."
Quennell restated that he is sorry for what the Klassen and Kvello families have been through.
"My decision to support the appeal was made with reluctance due to the consequences for the Klassen and Kvello families. I am sorry for what the families have gone through. I hope that together we can find a way to mitigate the impact of this appeal on the families."
The Attorney General said the judgment has far reaching implications beyond the issue of malicious prosecution. If allowed to stand, it may significantly impair the Crown's ability to prosecute certain cases, including allegations of spousal abuse and child sexual abuse. It also has the potential to discourage other professionals such as doctors, nurses, social workers and teachers from reporting possible signs of abuse to the police.
"I do not think the people of Saskatchewan support a change in the law that prevents the investigation and prosecution of these kinds of cases," Quennell said.
