SASKPOWER CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Released on January 19, 2004

January 18th marked the 75th anniversary of the creation of SaskPower.

"SaskPower and its employees are proud to have provided the people of Saskatchewan with safe, reliable and cost-effective power for 75 years," Minister responsible for SaskPower Frank Quennell said. "As well as responding to the changing needs of our customers, SaskPower has had a significant impact on the provincial economy, thanks to its sound fiscal management and long-standing commitment to work with local companies."

SaskPower was formed through the signing of The Power Commission Act, 1929, which was assented to on January 18th, 1929. The first SaskPower office opened in February of that year. Since its inception, SaskPower has expanded its mandate to include the development and use of renewable energy sources, including wind power generated at the corporation's own Cypress Wind Power Facility.

"SaskPower's role in our province goes well beyond providing electricity," SaskPower Acting Board Chair Patricia Quaroni said. "We are a corporation that is historically rooted in Saskatchewan values, with a homegrown commitment to service."

"The success of a corporation can be measured by the strength of its people," SaskPower President and CEO John Wright said. "Our dedicated and hardworking employees are key to SaskPower's continued success."

SaskPower operates three coal-fired power stations, seven hydroelectric stations, four natural gas stations, as well as 16 turbines at its Cypress Wind Power Facility. The corporation serves more than 434,000 customers, across the most extensive network of power lines in Western Canada.

The corporation plans to mark its 75th anniversary with a number of activities to be held throughout the province, which include the launch of a Virtual Power Museum on SaskPower's web site, a travelling history display, and a history contest for SaskPower customers. Events are also being planned for SaskPower offices in communities across the province. Details regarding anniversary activities will be announced throughout the year.
