NEW CHIEF OF STAFF APPOINTED

Released on January 19, 2004

Premier Lorne Calvert announced today that Gord Nystuen has been appointed as his new Chief of Staff effective immediately.

Nystuen comes to the position from Saskatchewan Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization (SAFRR) where he served as Deputy Minister since September of 2000. He joined the public service in 1992 and has served in a number of policy and operational positions in the fields of transportation, gaming, health and finance.

"I'm pleased an individual of Mr. Nystuen's integrity and experience has accepted this challenging position in my office," Calvert said. "His understanding of government and his commitment to progressive public policy will be a significant asset."

Nystuen replaces Deb McDonald. McDonald served as Chief of Staff to the Premier since August of 2001.

"Deb McDonald has worked hard and made many valuable contributions over the last two and a half years," Calvert said. "She served as Chief of Staff during a very difficult time, and I will always be grateful for her dedication."

McDonald will continue in Executive Council in the near term, aiding Nystuen in the transition.

Hal Cushon has been appointed Acting Deputy Minister of SAFRR.
