Melfort has been chosen as the site of the 2006 Saskatchewan Winter Games.The Games, tentatively scheduled for the week of February 19th to 25th, 2006, will involve over 2,000 young athletes, coaches and managers in 18 events and up to 1,500 volunteers. Many of the athletes competing at the provincial games will go on to represent Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Games.
"Melfort's vibrant community is an ideal venue to showcase Saskatchewan's tremendous athletic talent and dedicated volunteer base," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joan Beatty said. "The 2006 Games will challenge those involved to draw upon the strength and inventiveness that is so much a part of Saskatchewan."
Melfort's experience in hosting high profile sporting events is extensive. In 1988 the City hosted the Saskatchewan Summer Games followed by the successful Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior 'A' Hockey Championships in 1996, the provincial Men's Curling Pool Tankard finals in 1995 and the provincial women's Scott Tournament of Hearts finals in 2002.
"The Saskatchewan Games continue to be one of our province's premiere sporting events. The Games provide a perfect stage for our young developing athletes to experience the thrill and excitement of competing in multi-sport games," Saskatchewan Games Council Chairperson Brenda Dowling said. "Many of these athletes will draw on their Saskatchewan Games experience as they compete at other multi-sport events including the Canada Games."
The Games originated in 1972 and are held every two years alternating between summer and winter sports.
