The Government of Saskatchewan remains deeply concerned about the current political situation in Ukraine, and hopes that the upcoming presidential election in that country on December 26th will be conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner, reflecting the democratic will of Ukrainians."The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes the historic importance of the December 26th presidential election, both to the people of Ukraine and to Saskatchewan people of Ukrainian heritage," Government Relations Minister Len Taylor said. "A dozen years ago, Ukrainians chose the path to democracy. Today, the people of Canada and Saskatchewan stand with the people of Ukraine in their efforts to realize their democratic choice."
The federal government has sent the largest ever Canadian election observation mission to Ukraine to monitor the December 26th vote. A number of Saskatchewan citizens, including the Speaker of the Saskatchewan Legislature, P. Myron Kowalsky, are participating.
"Dedicated Saskatchewan citizens have volunteered their skills as part of the Canada Corps Observation Mission to help ensure a free and fair election in Ukraine," Taylor said. "The Speaker's involvement is most fitting, since his office represents the collective commitment of the people of Saskatchewan to parliamentary democracy, whether at home or abroad."
